CAPA is pleased to introduce Author Nancy Arant Williams.
1. How long have you had the yearning to write?
Interestingly enough, I'm not one of those people who grew up
thinking I'd be an author. I wrote for my own pleasure, but never
once did I entertain the notion that I would ever be a published
author. But God...I say that a lot these days. When my husband
retired, God moved us lock, stock and barrel, as they say, to
Missouri from the only home we had ever known--Nebraska. And because
I was at loose ends, grieving for what I left behind, I struggled to
find my way, identifying big-time with Abraham's wife Sarah in
scripture.
Two years to the date after our move, I asked God for the thousandth
time what I was supposed to do in my new niche, and He said to sit
down, that He would teach me how to write. And to my utter
amazement, He did exactly that.
2. What advice would you give to a new author who wants to be
published?
The truth is, it's not easy to get the eye of a traditional
publisher who has thousands of new submissions on his or her desk each year.
This is why so many authors are turning to alternative methods of
publication.
In general, the self-publishing market has been flooded with
mediocre work that either is poorly written or poorly edited or
both. And the Christian market is no different.
From my viewpoint as both an author and an editor, I think we as
believers must use due diligence both to produce an excellent
product and to honor God. In many arenas, Christians have gotten a
reputation, and not undeserved, for putting out less than quality
work, so we need to work twice as hard to reverse the trend and
clean up our reputation.
It's easy these days to plunk down money to self-publish a book, but
to self-publish an
excellent
book takes skilled editing to make the author's work shine in the
marketplace.
I'm on my soapbox here, but I would encourage first-time authors to
do one of two things before self-publishing: either take a course
and learn to edit your own work, or be patient and save your
money to hire an editor to make your manuscript the very best it can
be. Being in a hurry can make you regret showcasing poor quality
workmanship, which will not be welcome in the marketplace.
(Remember, we only get one chance to make a great first impression!)
And while editing may sound like an unnecessary and expensive
proposition, in the long run, it's an extremely wise investment.
3. Do you ever struggle, juggling more than one career at a time?
I really do. My husband and I own and operate a small Bed &
Breakfast, called The Nestle Down Inn, in the heart of the beautiful
Missouri Ozarks. (See our website at
www.nestledowninn.com)
I also write, edit and review books, as well as owning and operating
CAPA, the Christian Authors' Promotional Alliance, which is geared
toward marketing the work of small-press and self-published authors.
And unfortunately, I am a fussy housekeeper, which means I use every
spare minute and then some.
